Iceland in April
April is the month Iceland declares summer - literally. Sumardagurinn fyrsti, the First Day of Summer, is a public holiday (Thursday 22 April in 2027), celebrated with scout parades in weather that routinely includes snow. The declaration is less absurd than it looks: daylight is growing at the fastest daily pace of the year, the puffins come back, the first month clearly above freezing arrives - and the aurora season quietly closes in the middle of it. One warning for 2027 planners: Easter, usually April's big event, falls in late March that year.

A counter-intuitive fact from the geometry: at Iceland's latitude the daily rate of daylight gain keeps rising past the equinox, so April - not March - has the fastest pace of the year in Reykjavík, about six and a half minutes every day. (March's 31 days still add slightly more in total, and in Akureyri the acceleration continues into May.) By the 30th the evening lasts until nearly ten and the night no longer gets astronomically dark - which is also the end of another season, below.

Where these numbers come from. The Icelandic Met Office publishes 30-year normals tables for 1961-1990 only - there is no published 1991-2020 table. We computed these from the Met Office's own monthly station files across the 30 years to 2020. They are computed, not published, and we say so rather than implying an official table exists.
April is the first month clearly above freezing on the mean in both cities - though Akureyri's mean daily minimum still sits just below zero, so northern nights keep their frost. Snow, sleet and proper storms all still visit, especially early in the month and in the north; what April reliably delivers is not warmth but light and length. The spring thaw is its own phenomenon with consequences for drivers, covered below.
Sumardagurinn Fyrsti: Summer By Statute
The old Icelandic calendar had two seasons, and its first summer month, Harpa, begins on the first Thursday after 18 April - so the First Day of Summer falls between the 19th and the 25th, and in 2027 on Thursday 22 April. It has survived as a statutory public holiday, celebrated with scout parades and brass bands across the country; Reykjavík's 2026 edition had parades and family festivities at four locations. The folk belief holds that if winter and summer "freeze together" - frost on the eve - a good summer follows. In the honest-numbers department: when a meteorologist tallied 93 Reykjavík years, frost on the eve was followed by 13 above-average summers and 20 below-average ones. The holiday is real; the omen, statistically, points the other way.
The Aurora Season Ends
April is last call. The season that opened in late August closes around mid-April, when the nights become too bright - early April still works, with the equinox activity peak just past, but by the final week the sky never gets properly dark and will not again until late August. Plan aurora hopes for the first ten days, and treat anything later as a bonus.
The Birds Come Back
April is arrivals month. The golden plover - lóan, spring's official herald, whose first sighting makes the national news - has typically already landed in late March. The puffins follow: the first birds are reported in early-to-mid April (9 April in 2026, at Grímsey and Borgarfjörður eystri), and the colonies fill around the turn of April and May. Whale watching steps up too - Reykjavík operators report a spring peak of humpbacks in Faxaflói as capelin gather, and the seasonal tour schedules resume on 1 April. On the farms, lambing begins in the last days of the month; May is the high season in the sheep sheds.

Driving: Studs Off, Roads Soft
Two dates and one phenomenon. Studded tyres must be off from 15 April - the regulation bans studs and chains from 15 April to 31 October, unless conditions demand otherwise - and the winter tread-depth rule runs out the same day. The phenomenon is the spring thaw: as frost leaves the ground, gravel and regional roads temporarily lose bearing capacity, and Vegagerðin posts axle-weight restrictions (þungatakmarkanir) on affected routes, mostly in the north and Westfjords. A rental car is unaffected, but it explains the season's queues of waiting lorries. The highland F-roads stay closed throughout - our dataset has no opening earlier than 23 May - and late-season snow can still close mountain passes, so umferdin.is remains a daily habit.
How Busy Is It?
A genuine shoulder month. Icelandic Tourist Board counts show 149,123 foreign departures through Keflavík in April 2025 - under half of peak-August volume, and slightly below March that year. The Easter effect works both ways: April 2024, when Easter fell in March, ran to just 137,210. In 2027 Easter is again March's, which should make April 2027 one of the year's quieter, better-value months - long days at pre-season prices.
